Ellen,
Here I suspect our preferred searches capabilities thru My Millennium are probably under-utilized given their value. Personally, I find it to be a useful kind of alert service - I create and save searches of all kinds in my My Mill, and have them marked to send me email alerts when (new) relevant titles become available in our database.
In terms of marketing, we are looking at making sure we're reminding our users about this service.
Re: pros and cons... On the up side, it
functions as an email alert service for our users
saves them time from having to re-search our catalog as much
probably reduces the number of "rush" requests for cataloging
since items reported on are done being cataloged
keeps users reminded about library resources, including other my mill options
does allow for some flexibility and customization of alerts
Perhaps on the downside:
currently there's no III statistics report on how many patrons are using it
(this should be an enhancement)
since cat date is the trip, sometimes existing titles get reported on
(b/c of recataloging, etc.)
citations in alert emails contain no hyperlinks to the catalog to check up-to-date availability, etc. (at least not as of 2002 ph. 3) (should be an easy enhancement)
all for now, hth
John

We have a Best Sellers club and patrons always want other authors than
those included on our lists. I tell them to use the preferred lists to get
notification of new purchases by their preferred author and then place
their own holds. Their own private "Best Sellers" list.
