Dear Amy,

Here in the Helin Consortium in R.I., we had been acquiring our authority
records from OCLC/MARS until OCLC sold that division to Backstage last year.
We were happily using the 001 field which included the unique OCLC control
number for both duplicate detection and overlay.

The authority records we now receive from Backstage duplicate the 010 field
in the 001 field, as is the case with authority records acquired from most
non-OCLC vendors. This has caused us to have to change to using the 010
field for duplicate detection and overlay. We also have to re-index all of
our existing authority records so that the index is populated with the 010
field instead of the 001 field.

We definitely want to keep the 001 field in our authority records in part to
tell our "old" authority records apart from our "new" ones but also because
I wouldn't want to put money on never needing to index them again!
