Varying the length of the description of fixed-length fields

We are currently limited to only 14 characters for the contents of the
fixed-length field for item status.  Has anyone been able to increase the
length of these fields.  I understand that the field descriptor can have a
long name (and this can be altered in ASAA) effective for both Millennium
and the webOPAC.  But has anyone been able to increase the length of the
description.
e.g field name = status;  long name = item status;  code = g; description =
request needed  (limited to 14 characters maximum).  We would like the
description to be longer so that it is more descriptive for public users.
If you have had any luck with this, or have some ideas I would appreciate
any comments off-list.
