Hi Everybody!

I would love it if it happened too. I hope Bill's contact was wrong & the
perception of movement of only "supporting databases" is a perception that
things are being changed by dribs and drabs over an extended period. Perhaps
even if it is just a matter of implementing new tables as part of routine
upgrades at first, it could be part of a slow and orderly change. Time will
tell. I hope they are. I remember how databases used to be altered before
SQL. Not pretty.

Requesting the change also sounds great. If we do that, please be sure to
request how you want the change made. I'm no SQL expert, but if I recall
correctly, part of SQL's Data Definition Language allows for
granting/revoking of specific rights to specific users/classes of users. We
would need to specify a generous standard for rights to read specific
tables, or the net result could be nothing more than a black box that is
easier for them to maintain.

Bill, when you say "dbase", I take it you meant database in a generic sense,
as opposed to dBase, the 3rd party database manager born in the '80s, right?

I'd love it if we could have the SQL functionality, though Create Lists
really isn't bad and it does simplify what could be some inconvenient joins
in an intuitive way.

Thanks,

Zoltan

I would LOVE this if it happened! WSU could gain all of the benefits of a
fully functional, fully populated relational database, and using SQL,
without having to use the "Oracle option," if this were done.

hi bill and zoltan,

has this ever been pushed as an enhancement request? is there any reason it
could not be?

how about a virtual show-of-hands from those sites on this list that would
be seriously interested seeing Innovative migrate to an open-source
SQL-compliant back end?

UH would certainly support such an effort.
