Todd -

Please clarify for me how you make the leap from the list of itypes (ours is a similar list) to getting the search limiting by material type to work well.

Is there a functional use of the itypes for search limiting? Or do you make sure (create lists, rapid updates, etc...) that the bib level code is parallel to the itypes?

Thanks for the clarification.

These are samples of our settings: we have many non-standard GMD codes because we display graphical representations to the public (ex: http://nrhcat.library.nrhtx.com/search/ta+series+of+un/tseries+of+un/1,12,24,B/exact&FF=tseries+of+unfortunate+events+bk++++7&1,3,)

Also reports that are built into the system will be of more use if there are more types (or search points) for effieciency though I would use as few loan rules as possible

Each item location is assigned a item type and the loan rule that matches this (the material type can be different). I have signifigantly reduced the number of loan rules for system efficientcy, but if you do limit some items (max a patron can have) and not others (other types of material) that have the same number of days loan each needs to be assigned to a different rule.

If I have further confused the matter feel free to call me as I know the intertwinning of this can get blurry.

Hope this helped.

Subject: The use of I-Types when setting up Millennium

Dear all,

We are currently beginning to implement III at Edge Hill and are having some difficulty in working out how we can map across our current practice to the new system.

I've got the I-type - P-type - Location - Loan rule thing (I think) however at present we don't really use I-type as we don't have limits set on how many types of one item a patron can borrow. We use the GMD's to limit searching.

Can anyone tell me the benefits of using the I-type versus the GMD for searching purposes, and if we do use I-type does it just have to be circulating items (as opposed to non-circulating)..

We have 3 week, 1 week, 1 day, overnight and end of day loan lengths - would we be better using these as item types? (Although if we have 5 copies of a book, they could all be on different loan lengths)..

I think the III example on CS Direct has confused me more than anything!

Any help would be appreciated..

Mandy
