Hah! I remember when we had our 5210's, and I remember them as being more reliable than our current 6210's, by far.
I, too, am quite interested in hearing about Libramation's Self-Checks (or others); I got to see a demo by them and was quite impressed...

".... and are more technically savvy than the average chimp"... Hmm, never thought of myself in this way....
OK, serious -- we have the same question since 3M is discontinuing support for the dos-based 5210 in Dec 2005. We know we will be forced to purchase a new unit next fiscal year. I posted the same basic question to the LITA list and got some useful information there. You may want to check their archive for the replies that were made to that posting as well.

We've had several Codeco, now Libramation, machines for 2.5 years.
Other than the card readers going out of adjustment because patrons fool with them, jam cards in them the wrong way, push on them with all their might because they have their card in backwards, and the like, and the usual materials that don't work for no apparent reason (but only occasional), we are relatively happy with them, and they cost far less than the comparable 3M machine.
Training patrons to use these machines properly is important. How you manage to do that is the trick ;-)
Although the support has been pretty good, actually getting someone in to fix stuff is problematic, as they are in Canada, and do not have repair folks all over the place like 3M. If you have staff that can follow instructions and are more technically savvy than the average chimp, this is fine.
