Wow! Thank you SO MUCH for your very informative and expert response! You've offered some great advice and given me a ray of hope for potentially implementing WebBridge! Thanks again and kind regards, Eeva

Eeva:
The ultimate answer to your question is "no," but you can make a general
decision about how far a patron can search before they need to use an
internet station.
We've had a web-based OPAC for 8 years, we filtered it from day one, so
by now I'm pretty immune to flames about filtering.
We use a product called Websense which offers some 40 categories which
you can either allow or disallow. On our OPACS, for example we don't
allow auctions or gambling or email. The theory here is that you can
search on Ebay and at some point you'll find a link and away you go, the
same with email. On the other hand we do have an allow list and over the
years have spent a lot of time following searches in the databases to
make sure everything that was necessary was accessible. We can also
unblock a URL in real time from any public service desk.
Like I said this has been a process which has been evolving from the
first time we saw a demo of a "webPac" Some other things we do:
We try to hide the browser so it looks like a catalog and not a public
machine. Now we use Public Web Browser, but for years we ran IE in kiosk
mode with a reg hack that pretty much gutted it.
99% of our catalogs are standup. This goes a long way toward making the
station undesirable for long-term use.
Most of our OPACS are in a clear sight line of a public service point
and staff have been trained to offer help to patrons who seem to
spending too much time at an OPAC.
As in many other things, human intervention works best and if you are
wrong about the patron surfing the net, then you have a teachable
moment.
I hope this helped.

Good morning! Thanks for sharing this info! We have less of a problem
with patrons accessing email and more of a problem with people who would
take advantage if they were able to get out through WebBridge to the
internet in general and sit there all day. How do you prevent that from
happening? Can you easily lock-down all the WebBridge databases? Thanks
for your help with this! Kind regards, Eeva

OK.
We filter and have set up a "policy" which allows all our databases, but
blocks email and some other stuff. Makes the catalog way cool, but stops
the OPACs from being email stations.
This wasn't much of a leap for us, because when we started to filter we
created a "kid safe" Library Resource Station and just extended it when
we launched WebBridge.
Oh yeah, we also use PWB, and a w2k policy which makes it pretty hard to
get to a desktop.

Eric: We too at London Public Library would like answers to your
questions! We have a huge issue with limiting patron access to the
Internet and though we purchased WebBridge as part of our initial system
purchase, we haven't been able to install it because of these issues.
Any advice from other Public Libraries with similar issues is indeed
most welcome! Thanks and kind regards, Eeva

Greetings - I would like to hear from others who have implemented
WebBridge.1] I am especially interested in the pre-planning process,
what
needs to be done. 2] I am aware of the current and past posting for
Metadata librarians. I am interested in how medium size public
libraries
approach and assign tasks associated with ongoing WebBridge maintenance.
3]
We want to enable WebBridge on all the OPAC's yet don't want all the
OPAC's
to become sanctuaries for e-mail addicts. We are behind a firewall. How
are
others handling this? Is hiding the address bar sufficient? 4] What
other
unexpected or unintended results occur post WebBridge?
