Multiple editions in Public Library setting
[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]
Good afternoon! We are a public library and we would like to know how other public libraries handle multiple editions of books, etc. with regard to public catalogue access and bibliographic level holds. We have bibliographic level holds and when we have a separate bib for each edition, then the holds can gather on one edition and leave the other one high and dry. (this happens a lot with hardcover and paperback). To resolve this problem, we began to use only one bib for the different editions. This makes the Catalogue a lot easier to understand and solves our hold problems. However, this does mean that the bib contains multiple ISBN #s. This causes a problem with "match and overlay" in batch loading of records (added copies) AND in sending out orders via EDIFACT where it picks the first ISBN in the bib to ship out to the vendor. So, though we are gaining in the area of holds, we are making work at the acquisitions stage. We'd like to know how other III public libraries catalogue their multiple editions? Do any of you use the 021 (alternate ISBN field) and a separate index for alternate ISBNs??? Thanks and kind regards, Eeva
