RE: Courtesy notices

Jim, Paul and Ruth had great comments on Courtesy Notices.

To add to what they said, the system will only look for the parameters based on the loan rules. If you modify the loan rules and the item is already checked out, then it will queue a courtesy notice when it is getting close to the due date. If you use a new set of loan rules (which is not really necessary here), then it will ignore all older checked out items. When we rolled out courtesy notices, I missed two loan rules and heard people complain that they did not get a courtesy notice. I was able to figure out which loan rules were missed by looking at the loan rule on the items where no notice was created.

The other big thing about courtesy notices is that the file is regenerated every day. So if you do not print courtesy notices one day (lets say you end up with 15" of snow), then the file gets cleared the following day. It is not like overdues and other circ notices that build up. This is why it is highly recommended that they are on auto notices every day of the week.

I know that people here really love them. I have not looked at the fines paid to see if the overdue charges have gone down. I look at it with a more positive outlook...that materials are returned in a more timely fashion for others to use. Sounds like an conference paper! Albeit a real boring one...

Hope this helps --

Best -- Corey

Subject: Courtesy notices

Hello Everyone:

At the University of Miami we are almost ready to implement courtesy
notices, and I wonder if anyone knows if the system will send courtesy
notices to patrons with items that were checked out before the courtesy
notices were enabled. As an example, a student that checked out an item
a month ago expecting a courtesy notice to remind them, will it be sent?
Or will only be sent to patrons that checked out items after the
courtesy notices were enabled in the system.

Thanks,

Schlomit Schwarzer
