Hello, everyone --

I share this concern, certainly. But as a person who will be presenting this
spring, and also as someone who's already made his Hilton reservation, what
I think we need is really focused and precise information. I am concerned
that, with all good intentions, we'll subject ourselves to a series of
"orange alerts" which don't actually amount to anything.

How can we find out here, on the whole list (not by each of us calling a
phone number), if the situation changes at the Hilton, such that one at
least might try to get a room at a different hotel? Not to mention the
implications for the entire conference venue.

Thanks for bringing this up, Mitch. I just hope we can get information that
really -is- prompt and up-to-date, and doesn't require independent
verification by each one of us.

Best wishes,

Subject: SF HOTELS: negotiations still going on

I was just asked by an IUG member what is the status of the hotel
strike in SF; and, will it be resolved by the IUG conference in May?
I called the San Francisco Labor Council (415.440.4809) to find out.

The answer is:
Negotiations are still going on; and, no one knows when it will be
resolved.

Currently there is a "cooling off period" and negotiations are
supposed to continue, but as of right now, there is no resolution.

I would like to remind everyone that there are union hotels, which
are not involved in the dispute, throughout San Francisco. To locate
one go to:

http://www.unionlabel.org/cgi-bin/travel_planner.cfm?state=CA&city=SAN%20FRA
NCISCO&service=Hotel/Motel

Please note: Hotels which may be picketed will have a notice such as:

XXXXXX Hotel - San Francisco - EMPLOYEES LOCKED OUT: DO NOT PATRONIZE!

I believe these are the hotels involved in the dispute, and there is
no more information at the current time.

I am not sure that the list is up-to-date, so you should call the SF
Labor Council to verify if the particular hotel you will be attending
is being picketed or not.

In my humble opinion, if there is a picket line, you should not cross
it to show solidarity with the hotel workers. If we are not in favor
of fair wages, benefits and working conditions for hotel workers, how
can we be in favor of the same for librarians?

In union,

Mitch Turitz
