- Subject: RE: Scanning for ereserves
Thanks to everyone who responded to my questions about e-reserves and
Adobe problems.
With regard to the problems in printing from Adobe Acrobat, I received
several suggestions to make sure that we were using the Adobe Acrobat
print function and not the browser print function. Good advice, but
that didn't seem to be our problem. It was also suggested that we check
the "Print as Image" option in the "Advanced Print Setup" window. This
suggestion did work: a computer that was printing only blank pages _did_
print the document when "Print as Image" was selected. This doesn't
seem to be the whole story, though: another computer printed the
document just fine with "Print as Image" deselected.
With regard scanning procedures I received only one response. That
response describes using a ScanPartner 15C, scanning at 300 DPI in Black
and White, without compression.
Thanks again to all who replied.

Subject: Scanning for ereserves
At Truman State University we have encountered some problems with our
ereserves program. We are currently using an HP Scanjet 3970, scanning
our documents at 200 dpi, grayscale, then compress and produce as a PDF.
For many (if not most) of our documents, we'd like to scan in
black-and-white, but our scanner occasionally dies when we try to scan
in B&W. This happens often enough that we don't bother.
Late last fall we discovered that some computers on campus (we're
estimating about 1 out of 10) will not print the PDF documents.
Instead, Acrobat just "prints" blank pages. We haven't been able to
figure out why: what seem to be identical computers with what seem to be
identical versions of Adobe Acrobat nevertheless behave differently.
Our tech person has fiddled with our resolution/compression, and has
found settings that any computer on campus will print. Unfortunately,
the readability is now less than what our reserves people will accept.
So ...
We're interested in whether anyone has encountered, or better yet
solved, the situation where the Adobe Acrobat Reader prints blank pages.
But we're also interested in other libraries doing ereserves. There was
a brief discussion last September about scanners when the Fujitsu
ScanPartner 15C was recommended; we'd like to hear any other
recommendations. We're also interested in how you do your scanning:
what resolution, compression, etc. do you use?
You can reply directly to me, and I'll summarize for the list.
