Email notices & spam filters

We use email notices, however we are getting some reports from some of
our users that they are not receiving them (particularly AOL users). I
suspect that we may be the victim of a SPAM filter (but I am not sure
which end). 

Looking at the AOL site they appear to have quite comprehensive info
about what to do - but I am not sure I understand it. Has anyone had to
get their server on their "White List"? Or do you instruct your patrons
to include your ip into the email filter addresses?
