I'm certain there are people with more recent experience - we migrated from
Inlex to Millennium in late 1999. However, one of the cataloging practices
that worked in the old system still causes problems today. In the old Inlex
system we used the 092 field in the bib record for printing spine labels.
Millennium uses this correctly for the call number display. Also, we had
many pre-automated system records without tags and we didn't assign subject
headings to fiction [a short cut common in some public libraries]. Point
is, if you have any unconventional cataloging practices, you may not want to
spend money on cleanup until after migration because the cleanup may not
catch them. Get this "institional history" information by meeting with your
staff, give the people doing the migration examples of irregular practices
and ask them to insure their process will address them and give you the
desired results for your money.

Subject: Data Clean-Up Advice

Colleagues
Our library is migrating to Millennium as an integrated system. We have
had INNOPAC (for acq/ser/fin) and DRA for the OPAC and Circulation. My
question relates to the pros and cons of cleaning up data prior to or
after migration. For example, we are trying to provide matchpoints for
our serials records and our cataloged monographic records by adding the
OCLC number to the INNOPAC database. My boss is questioning the value
of this effort. So, for those of you who might have gone through this
process, what are the advantages / disadvantages of waiting until after
migration to clean up the records?

Thank you very much for any advice or perspectives you can share.
Janet
