Re: Duplicate checking in Millennium

It's irritating to me. Yes, in some circumstances, checking duplicates
is helpful. In most, however, it is not.

The way the system is set up here, it always checks for duplicates. No
dialog box. I'd love to see even that much flexibility.

In the telnet catalog, acquisitions would be told of duplicates when
entering new records - useful. Cataloging would be told of duplicate
barcodes or duplicate call numbers - also useful. When entering new
records in the Cataloging module, one could choose to be told of
duplicates or not, but you only needed to make the choice once per
session. That was a reasonable compromise. I would love to see similar
functionality in Millennium.

The duplicate checking business in Millennium seems to be a major
design flow. It's one of those things that just make me want to switch
to a different library system. Duplicate checking is certainly useful
for new records, but editing records is a different issue. There has to
be a way to differentiate between these two functions (dup. checking for
new recs and dup. checking for existing recs), but, according to
Innovative, there isn't one.
Does anyone else find it irritating? Would this be a popular
enhancement request?

Happy Holidays!

A related question - How do you get Millennium to stop asking if you
want to perform duplicate checking? Is it possible? I'd like to just
tell it once instead of always getting a dialog box that I have to
answer.
