What you explain to me makes sense. And when I had suggested something like this to the III helpdesk techie, he said that the field printing and indexing were two different things, and what I was suggesting would not work. I am glad to hear from you that we were on-track with the "t > u" solution. I'll go back to them with these details and will ride with it until I get someone who knows "what is what"

We had the same problem.  It has been a few years, but as I recall we had III change the 240 in our system indexing to field code u instead of t.  That makes the 245 the first t field.  It works great.  Once the change was made in the indexing, we had to rapid update our 240 t bibs to 240 u bibs.  But it was no big deal in our case.

This one just came up, or maybe we asked the question once before but blocked out the answer. So please excuse if this is a duplicate:

Our due date slips are printing the uniform title (MARC 240) instead of the title proper (MARC 245) if there is a 240 tag in the record. It does not happen often, but there are some instances where this causes big-time headaches. The example that brought this up recently is the book by:  Jannings, Linda  where the title proper (245) is "The best Christmas present of all" and the uniform title (240) is "Come back Buster"  So, the duedate slip prints with "Come back Buster" and clearly the patron is going to think the wrong item was checked out to them.

When we checked with III, we got the answer: "Due slips are designed to use the first title field discovered in the bibliographic record, which could be any of a number of possibilities (130, 240, 245...).  Both of these are hard-coded, and, unfortunately, are not customizable at this time. This would be an enhancement request.  To make 
an enhancement request, you would want to .... "

I have to think that other libraries have wrestled with this issue already. What are you doing? We surely do not want to delete the 240 fields from the records - they provide great searching capabilities. Is there any other workaround that will allow libraries to keep the uniform title and still have the title proper print on the duedate slip?
