On our website we try to create direct links to the catalogue using WORD or TITLE searches to find an exact DVD or VHS. We manage ok in about 90% of our titles, but have problems regularly.
One recent for example:

We have an item with the title: Yu-gi-oh! the movie [VHS]. ...

I don't have much to offer about why the searches don't work, but if you want 100% success with links to items in the catalog the only way to do so is to use the record number in the link, using the format http://yourserver/record=xyz. E.g., a link to the the VHS edition of Yu-gi-on! in your catalog would be <http://209.139.23.23/record=b1185436>.

In the Silver release the record number is hidden in the source code of the bib display. View the source code and do a find for "recordnum".
