There are two basic issues here. The first is patron self-renewal. Alison and Mieko have good solutions for controlling the renewals. We do not allow renewals of reserves item by the loan rule and that people would need to drop back in before renewing items. If your loan rule is setup properly, and you allow holds on reserve items, then a hold on an item would (I believe) prevent someone from renewing it online.

Insofar as the holds, that can be controlled with great precision depending on the way that your records are setup. There is a table that is setup by Innovative (with your input of course) called the Request Rule file (see users manual page #101221). This table will provide additional limitations on what may be requested by the patrons. I say additional because the loan rule rules supreme in matters of holds. However, should you want to further limit requesting (say to a specific location or type of material), that is controlled by the request rule. We are currently looking at expanding our holds, but right now, only items that are off campus can be requested. That will be changed soon (hopefully...but I am in a battleground state and that is a LOT OF PRESSURE)...back to the system. Another neat thing with Silver is that the request button does not show up on the screen if the item is NOT requestable. So if the item can be requested, then it shows the button. (I could not find this on CSDIRECT...I think this is a helpdesk thing to setup). See page 105791

Hope this helps.

Hi all, please excuse the cross posting. Here at Wellesley College we would like to implement patron self renewals
and holds online. We are reluctant as it seems Innovative can only turn
it on or off as a whole, i.e. we cannot exclude certain locations. We do not want patrons renewing or placing holds on course reserve items
online. The only way it seems to stop them is to put in the loan rule that
it is not renewable or holdable. Yet we need to have the loan rules allow
holds and renewals so staff may make these transactions. How do other institutes deal with this problem? Are your reserves either
non-renewable and holdable or is there something we are missing all
together?? Any of your experiences would be appreciated, Kara Stroschein
