Hi Amy,

Years ago I authored a simple conversion tool geared specifically at the
OCLC/ALA character set. If this is or may be what you are dealing with, I am
happy to supply it for free. (existing technology that does not spend
resources I do not have is free)

I will be out of the office for a week & checked my email to get a document
to help honor a commitment to my son's cub scouts. If you find another
solution in the meantime, more power to you--this is a great list! Otherwise
launch an email at me or the list on 18 OCT.

Originally, this tool started life as something to print cards & pockets
using only ASCII, ignoring diacrits and replacing things like the "a e
ellision" or the "thorn" with characters from the standard ASCII character
set. Over the years this routine has been

Good luck!

Subject: Deleting diacritics from records

How can I output bibliographic information from the OPAC to a Microsoft
product with the diacritics either appearing as the proper diacritic or
stripped out of the text. When we Output fields from records using a
management list and FTS, and open the resulting file in either Microsoft
Word, Excel, or Access all of the diacritics appear as numbers within
curly brackets {1;23}. We would like to create lists of our records for
various reasons and can't generate a usable list. I have tried "find
and replace" programs, but I never seem to get a clean file. If the
file is very large, it takes forever to process.

Thanks,

amy
