Linda:

We use the permanent location for the book and a status of New Book
Shelf.
When Loan Services staff periodically remove books from the New Book
Shelf,
they check them in and clear the status, at which point the item reverts
to
the default status of hyphen. This is fast, easy and provides useful
information to patrons and staff who may be looking for a particular
title.
It also avoids "pseudo-checkouts." If a title is checked out and then
returned, it does not return to New Book Shelf but is simply shelved in
its
permanent location.
