Metal shelves should not be an issue, but...

Four things to be aware of:

1.) Placement of tags can cause "interference" (i.e., if a pile of thin
books have the tags all placed at the same within the items the signals
will not be strong enough to work properly due to alignment of the tags
(a potential issue with children's books)) Next time you see a demo of
this technology pay attention that the sample set used to demo has every
tag placed in a different location to not allow this issue to be
noticeable, but conversion stations only place the tags in three unique
spots.

2.) CD's and DVD's can cause detuning. Companies are working on tags
for this type of media, but currently the container must be tagged, not
the item. The aluminum reflects or reduces the signal strength.

3.) RFID is a productivity tool not a security feature. Placing the
item in an aluminum briefcase or shiny book jackets (i.e., newer guiness
books, many paperback covers with foil designs) can cause tags not to
respond.

4.) RFDump is a public domain utility that can be used to alter RFID tag
contents and cause the RFID tag to be inaccurate, thus other tagging is
still required as backup in someone gets mad and decides to wipe all
your chips.

We are not using RFID yet, but probably will in the next few years and
are thoroughly researching all potential issues.

Please respond to the list. My library may be interested in doing this
in the future. The more we know about it the better.

Thanks,
Doris
