Last year we purchased the 3M digital library assistant and conversion
station as precursor to self check out. I have found that the product
works well with our metal shelving. You do need to move the materials
about 1/2 inch from the shelf when you read. Most of the time we just
take the first volume and pull it out further and begin to read. The
reader works well and after the initial configuration of the DLA we have
had no problems with the exporting. Any list you can make in III can be
exported into the DLA. I have done the export in the text and silver
and prefer text because I feel the create list is easier to use. I do
have some trouble with linked records coming up as duplicate barcode
errors in the DLA software but it is not major.
The negative side is the initial time invested in retro-tagging the
collection. We have staff systematically tagging the monograph
collection and we have worked tagging into our current cataloging. The
materials are radio-tagged before being shelved. We don't use the
telephone renewal aspect of III. I have been thinking about the
possibility of having a birds of a feather at IUG to talk about RFID
perhaps we can bring the topic back up as time draws near.

If you are a iii library that has or is planning to convert to RFID I'd
like
to talk to you about the experience, the planning process, SIP licenses,
the
impact on Technical Services if you process in-house, accomodating for
Telephone Renewal [having a readable number on the item for the patron
to
use], how viable is the portable inventory wand around metal shelves,
loading data from Millennium into the portable inventory device, [can
that
be done through the Millennium Silver Data Exchange feature]. All the
practical questions that the vendors answer with "nobody has every said
there is problem with that".
