Hi,

we have the same problems with the lack of a non-filing indicator in the
700 analytical entry. This is of course due to MARC21, but most systems
offer a workaround (e.g. if you put the intial article in subfield $t
between square brackets, the title is indexed with and without the
intial article etc.).

e.g. How do you catalog: 700$aRush, Jennifer$tThe power of love?
If you turn on the stop word list (a, an, the) in the Millennium OPAC, a
user will never find 'the power of love' nor 'power of love' in the
title index.

We've seen American catalogs omit the initial articles from the 700
analytical entry; we think this is very offensive to the title ...

Does anyone have any other solutions (or does Millennium have a
workaround?).

thx,

Johan (VCOB - Belgium)

Maurine, does the article like "the" show up in the 246 field or in
the $t field of a 700 field. or basically where there is no filing
indicator or all articles eliminated from the beginning of the
"user-typed search?"

This seems like something that would have been discussed here before,
but I couldn't find it in the list archives: We'd like to expand our
list of "Characters removed from beginning of user-typed search".
Currently, our list is "a ,an ,the ;". We'd like to at least add
Spanish, French, German, and Italian initial articles, and might want to
add others as our collection becomes larger. Just wondered if anyone
had a more extensive list already prepared that they'd be willing to
share. Or if anyone has any warnings about doing this.

Thanks!
