Thank you to all of you who have responded. I received a number of
suggestions and inquiries. Some of you wondered why we were not using the
same classification format as we did for our VHS. The reason is simple: our
patrons wanted this (in particular, faculty). Basically, they get used to
going to a certain area for their topics in our book collection and would
like the same thing with our videos. We've discussed reclassifying our VHS
tapes, but our current cataloger refuses to do that. Since DVDs were a new
material type that we recently began adding, she agreed to begin their
classifications with LC call numbers instead of the shelf-list number (like
VHS).
On the suggestions made:
The early VHS records that you see when searching our catalog are actually
what was uploaded to Innovative when we went live last Spring. All of our
call numbers were placed in the 050 field. However, since then, all of our
new VHS records have call numbers in the 099 field. If you do a search for
VHS 2500, you'll see what I mean.
Second, our index rules go like this:
Call Number (c) -- 050 - Call number field group tag (c)
Call Number (c) - 090 - Call number field group tag (c)
Call Number (c) - 099 - Call number field group tag (c)
I have yet to hear from Innovative about this issue, but several of you
pointed out about the call number index that we're using. We only have the
one index, and of course, it's LC. And I think that's the problem. Our
format for our DVD call numbers do not comply with LC format, so it ignores
the DVD portion - basically assumes it is a prefix. I don't know of an easy
solution, other than buying another index, but we'll see what Innovative
says. I did want to pass this along, though, to all of you, since I had
such a strong feedback on this issue. Thank you!
