James:

It looks like you have a single call number index - presumably set as an
LC call number index. III's LC call number normalization rules expect
to see 1-3 alpha characters followed by numbers, etc. [see Manual #
101832]. It will eliminate any 'extraneous' alpha characters it finds
before the start of what it considers to be the real LC call number -
e.g. eliminate pre-stamps. In this case your VHS 2722 is being read as
a legitimate LC call number, while the normalization for DVD DT 87.45
.N44 is considering the 'DVD' to be a pre-stamp and stripping it from
the record.

If you are using the 099 call number field for local call numbers using
alpha prefixes, or not strictly following LC protocols , you may want to
consider obtaining a 2nd 'local' call number index. This would
segregate your true LC numbers [050/090] into the LC index, and put the
099 alpha prefix numbers into a separate index.

We have a similar setup at UM, with our 050/090 LC numbers in the LC
index, our 099 local numbers in the local call # index[typically alpha
prefixes/access numbers for non-book materials], and we have sudoc
numbers in a separate sudoc index.

Subject: call number searching

Using Millennium Silver:

We've got a situation that I have not had any luck trying to figure out.
There are times in which we want to do a call number search, just to see
what we have in our VHS or DVD collections. Both utilize the 099 field,
and
both use subfield a's for data. Here's the dilemma: If you go to our
library website (http://library.trevecca.edu/
<http://library.trevecca.edu/>
), you can do a call number search just for VHS and get a listing of our
VHS
videos (they all begin with VHS). Our DVD's are done the EXACT same
way,
using 099 field, subfield a's, all starting with DVD. But if you try to
do
a call number search for DVD, it says that no records are found.

Here are two specific records, the first of which is a VHS title and the
second is a DVD title:

Title: Newspaper industry

Call Number: VHS 2722

Title: Nefertiti resurrected

Call Number: DVD DT 87.45 .N44

This happens in all of the Millennium clients as well. Any advice will
be
greatly appreciated!
