Peter, We have a number of libraries on our system and depending on the
library they mostly use one or the other of the methods below:
Our libraries use the ICODE1 field for a number of statistical tracking
reasons and this is only one of them. But I assigned values in ICODE1 for
the 12 months of the year. The libraries on our system employing this
method assign the appropriate number to that field when the item is
created. Then after 6 months has gone by and they need to move those to
their real location (they have a New books location code), they can run a
list in create list and update the records with the proper location codes as
needed. I maintain a spreadsheet of values I've defined for ICODE1 offline
for our system since there aren't any "labels" associated with this field.
In other cases, some of our libraries use an OPAC message we've set up for
new books so that once an item is moved to its regular location, the OPAC
message is removed via rapid update. And I believe our libraries employing
that method are using the create date of the item as one of the search
criteria for the review file. Note, if you opt for this method and you
haven't set up the field to display in your OPAC with the help desk, you'll
need to do that.
There are advantages/disadvantages to both of these methods but two
potential ways to handle these items. In either case you can get a list so
that if you have to remove stickers or other kinds of labeling from the
physical items your staff isn't on a blind hunt. And in either case, you
give the system a "marker" to find these items later.
