- Subject: RE: Logins in Millennium
Hi, everyone. We just went "live" with Millennium (everything except
acquisitions) last week! We hadn't heard anything about system slowdowns
related to individual logins, so I hope this isn't the case. In fact, the
more we heard about the login accounts and what was controlled by them, we
really wanted to take advantage of everything that generic logins didn't
allow us to do, e.g. individuals saving their own preferences, managers
designing and setting up special templates for individuals, etc. We do have
some generic logins for students and other basic service area functions, but
so far have not noticed any slowdowns related to the individual logins. As
Andrea noted, staff seem to feel more comfortable too having their own
logins, in addition to their own initials.
This is requiring a bit more work for us at first, but I think in the long
run will be worth it. I'm noticing that it really is a training issue too,
as staff become more familiar with what controls the *environment* they are
working in, as opposed to their *authorizations*. Just as a side note, we
decided that staff users would not have access to the "settings" part for
their accounts, since there are options there that we wanted to make sure
were set consistently across the board. Hope this helps, even though we are
very very new users! I'd be very interested to hear about any slowdowns
related to this too.

We are smaller library and have created individual logins for staff for
the same reasons you have. It did create more work in the beginning but
once people were comfortable with Millennium the trouble shooting slowed
down.
We have 11 individual logins and 5 generic logins for our volunteers
etc. I have not noticed any significant slow down with the system. I
did notice that the staff was more comfortable experimenting with
Millennium when they had their own logins. Some of the staff was afraid
of messing up system settings and individual logins let people do what
they want without worrying about the other users.

Subject: Logins in Millennium
Hi,
I'm in the process of setting up logins for our Millennium, and would
like some feedback.
In telnet logins, I created individual logins so I could track problems.
Our trainer suggested that I not do that in Millennium as it apparently
slows things down, but rather that I just use the generic logins
provided by the system (milcat, milacq...) and just add a few extra ones
for special use.
I know I'm not clear on why individual logins can slow things down in
Millennium, and perhaps someone could explain it better to me. I
understand that the more logins I have, the more maintenance I have to
handle, but that's work I would be creating for myself with my eyes wide
open. I also know that if I don't have individual logins, people won't
be able the screen colors and what-not to their personal liking.
Considering the color variations we now have in telnet, I know that
opportunities for individual expression can be important around here -
for those of you who are wondering, the background colors around here
range from bright green to white... and no, mine's not the bright green
one...
So in addition to my question about slow-down, I would in general like
to know how various libraries have dealt with the issue. Thanks for any
help you can provide.
