I do a monthly set of new acquisitions lists using the "create lists" and "featured lists" functions, to be seen at http://catalog.maplewoodlibrary.org/ftlist/. Each month I create a review file of items acquired (based on the cat date), then I run a set of saved searches for various types of media against that review file. I sort them, and they are done. The "featured_list" web option allows me to display these lists on a page we call "What's New at the Library". I haven't had to learn any scripts or run any additional programs. Figuring out the most effective search strategies for the review files took a few hours at the beginning; now it takes me about 45 min. a month.

We are preparing to tackle creating a new books list. I know many of
the libraries on this listserv have already accomplished this, so I am
asking for tips and any advice that could be a timesaver for us. Our
first step is to create a monthly list of new books that are available
and on the shelves...we would also like to provide a live link to each
item's record in our online catalog...and of course we would like it to
be visually appealing, not just a long laundry list of indistinguishable
titles. Any suggestions/directions? Can you advise on the monthly
"maintenance" this will require? Thanks!
