Posting Description: The Law Library Cataloger is a professional librarian responsible for
original and copy cataloging and classification of library material in a
broad range of subjects in all formats, including printed serials,
integrating resources, and monographs; electronic resources including web
resources and e-books; microforms; and A/V materials. Responsible for
retrospective cataloging and classification of microforms and older
federal documents. Responsible for bibliographic record maintenance.
Trains and reviews the cataloging work of the split-position copy
cataloger/serials control clerk. Works with the local online integrated
library automation system (III's Millennium) and other automated systems
used by the library and with vendors of electronic resources to take full
advantage of system capabilities. Examples of activities relating to
electronic resources include creating links to and from library databases
and resources on the web, importing bibliographic records from commercial
suppliers into the local integrated system, participating in designing
filters for guided searches, and maintaining and troubleshooting
interfaces between the library's systems and resource suppliers' systems.
The Cataloger is expected to participate in the professional life of the
library, including formal and informal professional development, staying
abreast of developments in technical services and libraries in general and
discussing them with colleagues, and participating in departmental and
overall library planning and activities.
Qualifications: MLIS or MLS from an ALA accredited library school. At
least two years of demonstrated successful original cataloging experience
using AACR2, LCSH, LC classification, MARC formats, OCLC or RLIN, and an
integrated library system in an academic or research library. Good social
skills and the ability to work with a diverse staff and patron population.
Personal or professional experience in using Microsoft products and the
Internet.
