Position Description*

* *

*Systems Librarian*

*General Description:* The mission of the Millar Library’s Systems Librarian and unit is two-dimensional: (1) To provide support for the Library’s staff and to users of existing systems; (2) To participate in the planning and implementation of new and upgraded applications. The Systems Librarian is responsible for responding to the needs of staff and customers and for overseeing the activities associated with planning, implementing, and managing the information technologies that support and facilitate the Library’s information programs and services for faculty, students, and staff. The Systems Librarian reports to the University Librarian.

*Specific Responsibilities:*

1. Provides overall leadership in applying information technologies to the Library’s information programs, services and operations by assessing and responding to the needs of staff and customers, identifying options to meet these needs, and working with Systems staff and colleagues to meet these needs. Needs assessment includes:

* Confers and meets regularly with individuals and groups, including
the Library’s staff and customers as well as colleagues in the
University’s Office of Information Technology to be aware of
information, computing, and networking needs;
* Monitors patterns and trends in library and information technology;
* Chairs and/or participates in relevant Systems-related working
groups and committees;
* Provides advice and assistance on technology needs in the
development of proposals for outside funding.

2. Responsible for the selection, maintenance, and operation of the Library’s servers and network equipment in cooperation with the University’s Office of Information Technology. Provides operational support for the integrated library system (Integrated Interfaces) and other applications as well as products integral to effective library and information services.

3. Oversees installation, maintenance, and upgrades for staff and public workstations. Troubleshoots as necessary.

4. Provides leadership and technical expertise in developing a digital library infrastructure at the University.

5. Represents the Library in coordinating systems support with the University’s Office of Information Technology and other campus units. Collaborates with other libraries locally, regionally, and nationally on initiatives related to information technologies and applications. Represents the Library at local, regional, and national meetings, conferences and symposia.

6. Maintains up-to-date expertise via participation at workshops and professional associations.

7. Contributes to the work of faculty governance and university governance by serving on relevant committees and workgroups in the Library and at the University.

8. Contributes to scholarship at the level expected of Library faculty eligible for promotion and tenure.

9. Supervises full-time technical staff and student assistants.

*Qualifications:*

1. ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library/Information Science. A second master’s degree is desirable.

2. Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in the management and maintenance of computing systems in an academic library. Supervisory experience is preferred.

3. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including active listening skills and a strong commitment in responding to the needs of staff, faculty and students.

4. Demonstrated experience in running a library management system, a Windows-based local area network, and a UNIX-based website. Specific experience managing an Innovative Interfaces library management system with an OCLC interface is desirable.

5. Demonstrated experience in developing and managing a digital library, including the application of solutions for providing long-term access to locally and externally produced digital resources.

6. Knowledge of networking and client/server applications and current developments and trends in information delivery applicable to a university campus.

7. Demonstrated teaching/training skills.

8. Excellent interpersonal and managerial skills as well as the ability to prioritize tasks and assignments. Flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic and changing environment are desirable.

*The Environment*:

*Salary and Benefits*: This is a full-time, 12 month, tenure track position with a minimum annual 1.0 FTE salary of $44,460. Anticipated start date September 15, 2004. Full time benefits include 22 paid vacation days and 12 paid sick leave days per year, a choice of retirement and group health plans, and staff tuition rates. Librarians are members of the Academic Faculty and participate in the Faculty Senate
