LIBRARIAN, AREA STUDIES CATALOGER (JR#5667)

The University of New Mexico Libraries has the following opening: Area
Studies Catalog Librarian, a full-time, 12 month library Lecturer III
position (non-tenure track). Minimum salary is $38,000, negotiable;
appropriate to qualifications and experience. Desired start date of
October
1, 2004 (negotiable).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Required: Masters degree from an ALA-accredited Library/Information
Science program or international equivalent. A minimum of three years
experience in library cataloging. Knowledge of cataloging principles and
procedures including AACR2R, LC rule interpretations, LC subject headings
and classification, MARC 21 formats, and authority control standards.
Evidence of reading knowledge of a western European language.

Preferred: Academic or research library cataloging experience. Subject
knowledge or work experience with Southwestern, Hispanic, or Native
American research collections. Experience cataloging rare, audio-visual,
or electronic resources. Familiarity with digitization projects, metadata

creation, or markup languages. Evidence of participation or interest in
professional service and professional development. Knowledge of German,
Latin, or Spanish. Ability to work collegially with a diverse campus
community.

PRIMARY DUTIES:
The Area Studies Cataloger provides customized access to the unique
collections of the University Libraries? Center for Southwest Research
(CSWR), which contains materials on New Mexico, the American Southwest,
and
Latin Americana. Performs original and complex copy cataloging of
monographic materials in a variety of formats, subjects, and languages.
Prepares MARC records for print, non-print, and digital formats.
Participates with the CSWR and Library Information Technology Department
in
projects to enhance electronic access to locally developed databases.
Applies cataloging, subject, and database management expertise, working
with selectors to determine special needs, balance multiple priorities,
solve problems, and foster access to the CSWR?s collections. Participates

in professional service and professional development activities that
relate
to special collections cataloging and access. May have collection
development responsibilities.

ENVIRONMENT:
Catalog Services, located in Zimmerman Library, has a staff of 23,
including 6 faculty librarians. The department consists of 4 sections:
Database Management, Ibero-American Resources, Electronic Resources, and
Print Resources. The department participates in NACO and BIBCO.

The University of New Mexico Libraries is a member of the Association of
Research Libraries and the Greater Western Library Alliance, and
participates in the OCLC system as a member of AMIGOS. The University
Libraries contain over 2 million volumes and include four libraries,
Centennial Science and Engineering Library, Fine Arts Library, Parish
Memorial Library (business and economics), and Zimmerman Library
(humanities, social science, and education), as well as the Center for
Southwest Research. The University Libraries is a regional library in the

Federal Depository Library Program and currently uses Innovative
Interfaces, Inc. for OPAC, circulation, serials control, and acquisitions
systems. The UNM main campus enrolls 26,000 students and employs 2,900
faculty and 5,000 staff. UNM offers 92 baccalaureate degrees, 67 master?s

degrees, and 36 doctoral and professional degrees and attracts a
culturally
diverse student population.
