LIBRARIAN, IBERO CATALOGER (JR#5668)
The University of New Mexico Libraries has the following opening: Ibero
Catalog Librarian, a full-time, 12 month library Lecturer III position
(non-tenure track). Minimum salary is $38,000, negotiable; appropriate to
qualifications and experience. Desired start date of October 1, 2004
(negotiable).
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Required: Masters degree from an ALA-accredited Library/Information
Science program or international equivalent. A minimum of three years
experience in library cataloging. Knowledge of cataloging principles and
procedures including AACR2R, LC rule interpretations, LC subject headings
and classification, MARC 21 formats, and authority control standards.
Evidence of reading knowledge/comprehension of Spanish and/or Portuguese.
Preferred: Academic or research library cataloging experience. Strong
subject knowledge or work experience with Hispanic or Latin American
research collections. Some experience cataloging rare, audio-visual, or
electronic resources. Familiarity with digitization projects, metadata
creation, or markup languages. Evidence of participation or interest in
professional service and professional development. Verbal and written
fluency in Spanish or Portuguese. Ability to work collegially with a
diverse campus community.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
The Ibero Catalog Librarian provides customized access to the diverse and
often unique materials of the library?s extensive collections in Spanish
and Portuguese originating from Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula.
Performs original and complex copy cataloging of monographic materials,
artists? books, and small press imprints in a variety of formats and
subjects. Contributes BIBCO level records, NACO authority records, and
SACO subject proposals following national standards. Applies cataloging,
subject, and database management expertise, working with selectors to
determine special needs, balance multiple priorities, solve problems, and
foster access to UNM?s collections. Participates in professional service
and professional development activities that emphasize current issues in
cooperative cataloging programs and international bibliographic control.
May have collection development responsibilities.
ENVIRONMENT:
Catalog Services, located in Zimmerman Library, has a staff of 23,
including 6 faculty librarians. The department consists of 4 sections:
Database Management, Ibero-American Resources, Electronic Resources, and
Print Resources. The department participates in NACO and BIBCO.
The University of New Mexico Libraries is a member of the Association of
Research Libraries and the Greater Western Library Alliance and
participates in the OCLC system as a member of AMIGOS. The University
Libraries contain over 2 million volumes and include four libraries,
Centennial Science and Engineering Library, Fine Arts Library, Parish
Memorial Library (business and economics), Zimmerman Library (humanities,
social science, and education), as well as the Center for Southwest
Research. The University Libraries is a regional library in the Federal
Depository Library Program and currently uses Innovative Interfaces, Inc.
for OPAC, circulation, serials control, and acquisitions systems. The UNM
main campus enrolls 26,000 students and employs 2,900 faculty and 5,000
staff. UNM offers 92 baccalaureate degrees, 67 master?s degrees, and 36
doctoral and professional degrees and attracts a culturally diverse
student
population.
