Short Term Web Design/Development Contract

The Berkeley Public Library is seeking an experienced Web 
Designer/Developer for a short term project to redesign the library's 
current web site (http://www.berkeleypubliclibrary.org). The contractor 
must be able to come to the site for meetings with project leaders and 
participants.

Tasks

 Design a clean, appealing, usable and accessible (section 508 
compliant) site using best practices for HTML, XHTML, and CSS coding
 Design an identity for our website that speaks to both the library's 
mission and to our diverse community of users
 Design reusable templates, Web pages and graphics
 Work with client stakeholders to elicit business and functional site 
requirements
 Transfer existing content to new the site design
 Design CSS templates and/or content input templates to allow 
non-technical content contributors to add content without coding HTML or 
stylesheets
 Implement processes, procedures and workflow for update of site 
content and ongoing site maintenance

Site Requirements

At the conclusion of this contract the site must meet the following 
requirements:

 The approved design is implemented
 The site is easy to navigate
 Site easy to maintain by non-technical content contributors
 Site is section 508 compliant and gracefully degrades to older 
browsers (e.g. no Flash) and is accessible to our diverse user community

The ideal contractor will have the following skills:

 Be able to balance the need for good design with high 
usability/accessibility
 Be platform agnostic
 Extensive knowledge of HTML, XHTML and CSS and web standards in general
 Strong graphic design ability
 Experience using CSS for presentation and for layout
 Experience using Photoshop to produce graphics
 Previous successful designs of at least three other live Web sites
 Close attention to detail
 Ability to meet deadlines
 Strong communication skills/ability to communicate with a diverse 
group of stakeholders, and accept stakeholder input

Additional skills that are desirable include:

 Experience working with both Apache and IIS
 Experience scripting in perl and/or php
 Experience working with a mysql backend
 Experience integrating design templates with content management systems
 Knowledge of current technologies such as RSS and XML
 Experience integrating interactive capabilities such as online 
discussions into web sites

of materials is Monday, May 24.
