Hi Tom,
We have the Patron API and use it instead of WAM for the moment. If a patron
wants remote access to the databases listed on our web site, they are
prompted to enter their barcode. A Perl script on the server queries our
Millennium server using the Patron API, looking for a match of the barcode
and checking expiration date. If the barcode is validated, they are passed
on to a secured page which has the links to the databases.

This seems to be a fairly common setup. Let me know if you would like more
specific info.
