This brings up an issue that I have always wondered about but have never
fully researched or investigated. Maybe someone on the list can provide an
answer.
We use z39.50 to connect to several local libraries--they use various OPAC's
from other vendors. I've noticed that when we look at the MARC
display--this is through the WebOpac, and choosing the MARC display, we
often see donor information and other local information in 9XX fields.
This brings up a couple of questions.
1. Does anyone know if these are really in 9XX fields on the host system,
or is the INNOPAC retrieving holdings (and other) information and displaying
them as 9XX fields. I know that INNOPAC does serve holdings information as
9XX fields for z39.50 inquiries. I don't know whether it retrieves it this
way as well.
2. In INNOPAC is it possible to designate fields not to be exported in
z39.50 searches? We do have local fields here which are suppressed from
display in the WebOpac. I'm not sure whether they are suppressed from
display for z39.50 searches.

Im a little concerned about the use of donation notes in a bibliographic
record.
We suppressed them from use in the bibliographic record for a variety of
reasons:
1. We use OCLC Bibliographic Notification file and those records are
updated
daily. We can't know what records should or should not be overlaid or when
to protect 599 fields.
2. With the newly passed GLB Act( Gramm-Leach-Bliley) it makes us nervous
to present donor information. Our administration at the University is
wanting
us to suppress private information and some of this donation information is
questionable--especially when items are donated through financial gifts.
3. Patriot Act and FERPA are in the back of my head as to why we don't
use the bibliographic record.
Instead, we have used the item records know that we can always create a list
if retrieval is needed.
