In 2002, we at Temple (software only) bought a new COMPAQ Alpha which
went up in 2003. One thing I did was have it loaded with disk from the
start: 12 x 36GB drives. End result: we're completely prepared for Silver,
and will only have to tweak one region to accommodate The Release
Currently Known As 2005. The old DEC Alpha this replaced wouldn't have
been able to handle Silver, but it *was* vintage 1998.
In 2003, we acquired a "test/training" server of identical specs (now an hp
Alpha) via University Tech Fee grant. I received the message literally while
this box was being set up anc configured. Space allocations have been
adjusted on this new box to accommodate TRCKA2K5.
Sometime before we load TRCKA2K5 we'll take the live box down and do all
of the reconfiguration, plus any other needed maintenance on the
COMPAQ. I really think that's what everyone is going to have to do if you
aren't properly allocated now. We will most likely do it when we formally go
to that release, as it will probably require some downtime anyway. We'll
just extend that to include the reconfig. I expect the whole thing to take
about a day, which we'll schedule during an off time.

to go to Silver without new drives.
