Thank you. We are leaning toward using the note field in the Item record,
but obstacles still exist.

Yes, it is searchable in Create Lists, but not in MilCirc or WebOPAC. What
do you do when a patron walks up to the desk and wants to know what book was
purchased in someone's memory? We notify the donor what is being purchased,
but we do get this question from time to time.

One library responded that they have a separate database linked to a search
option on their web site. We'd like to avoid that type of extensive project
(and duplicate work) if possible.

The note field in item records is indeed searchable, but (at least in Telnet
version) only by creating a list. This is how we are adding information
about gifts. In order to retrieve the proper items, we include "gift" as
the first word in the note.

Hope this helps.

Subject: Indexed Item Field Use

We are looking for a way to record information about donated items in a
"searchable" field in the item record. We can't seem to find a suitable
field to use, as the note field is not searchable. Is anyone doing this or
something similar?

Thank you,
Tyra
