To add to what Doug Payne said, we have a neat cart that we setup for our soon to be implemented serials barcoding project. We purchased a laptop with a wireless network card (our whole library is "lit up") and have a USB scanner attached to it. It is doing a great job (I am at home, but it was a modestly priced Symbol scanner). It seems that these are becoming pretty standard fare.
What I like is the cart that the laptop sits on. We purchased it from Anthro (I have been pretty happy with their furniture). It is basically a stool with legs. They have all sorts of add ons for shelves that can be perfect for this kind of project. The website is www.anthro.com.
Hope this helps --

Subject: Scanning into a laptop
Is anyone doing any scanning, for inhouse or inventory, using a barcode
scanner and a laptop?
We have had so many problems with Percon type scanning that we are
looking for something better.
I know about using PDAs, which is interesting but looking for more
control at the scan time. (ie. Call number out of sequence.)
Some tests here with barcode scanning into a laptop (thru a wedge) has
some problems. Not all digits are scanned or are scanned incorrectly.
>From a scanner into a conversion to USB port wedge is better but not good
enough.
Scanner needs to be a gun type scanner. Specifically does a scanner with
a USB connector on the other end of the scanner cable work ok into a
laptop?
Note: Desktop works ok. Why not laptop? Laptops are already plenty big
enough to carry around in the stacks. Maybe too big.
Thanks is advance for any advice.
