Hi,
There is a lot of software available to turn your pc into a 'kiosk'
(most of these have a trial version onsite:
K-Meleon (
http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/) for Mozilla - free
Public Browser TeamSoftware (
http://teamsoftware.bizland.com/) for IE
(its previous version 1.28 was free for non-commercial use, now you have
to pay for version 2)
Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK)
(
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ieak/) Microsoft for IE (enabling you
more than MMC to control your browser - free
SafeBrowser PIMC (
http://www.mysafebrowser.com/) for IE
Deep Freeze (
http://www.deepfreezeusa.com/) for IE
WKiosk AppMac (
http://www.appmac.com/software/wkiosk3.html) for Safari
ICab Pro iCab (
http://www.icab.de/) for Mac
WinU Bardon (
http://www.bardon.com/winu.htm) for Windows (enabling more
than just IE, also other programs)
Of course, with some understanding of Windows 2000 or XP (preferrably in
a server environment), you can use the settings of your operating system
to create a 'kiosk' environment.
Another nice solution is to use a Linux bootable cd, like Knoppix (free,
http://www.knopper.net). You don't need another operating system then;
just a cd-drive. But if you want to tune Knoppix, you have to know
about Linux.
Does anyone know about other programs or best practices, please let the
list know ... I am making an inventory of all these solutions for all
public libraries in Flanders.
Greetz,
Johan

Subject: How To limit function on a client computer
Can anyone tell me how to limit the function for a computer being used
solely for catalogue search? (or show me a link where this information
is available)
I would like to dedicate a computer running win XP whose sole function
is for catalogue searching.
Thanks in advance
