Hi,
My name is Ellie Nacheman and I'm the cataloger at RISD who has been
handling the videos. I'll try to answer your questions the best I can.

Hello,

I am working on an article about a video collection in a college
library. I need "benchmarking" information about what others are doing
or have done. Would you please reply to me "off list" so I have some
data about how other libraries handle their media? Thanks in advance to
you all!

1: Are videos (DVDs) on your campus held in the library or in another
location?
Essentially they're in the library though some departments and the
Museum have minimal collections of their own, strictly for their own
use. Our collection is for use by students, faculty, curators, staff,
and visitors.
2: Has your library acquired a collection of videos or DVDs from
elsewhere on your campus? no
3: Are video (DVD) collections in your library separate from other
library materials?
Yes. They are locked up in restricted access shelving and are
non-browsable/ non-circulating (except to faculty for 24 hour use)
4: If shelved separately, are videos (DVDs) classified under the same
system as other library materials?
They started out being classed to a unique call # system. About
6 or 7 years ago we decided to use Library of Congress cataloging and
retrospectively cataloged the collection so that we could have full
on-line record access. The collection now numbers 1899
videos/dvds/laserdiscs, so I'm very grateful we started cataloging them
when we did
5: Have your procedures for acquiring videos (DVDs) changed over time?
If so, how? Not really. Our Visual Resources Librarian has built the
collection, but that has been with input and requests from faculty and
students who are heavy users of the collection--and that hasn't and most
like won't change. Most recently, in the past year, I would say one
change is that we're acquiring dvd format if there's a choice between
that or VHS.
