At the University of Toledo, we started using the mag stripe on student IDs about 18 months ago and it has been great. We are using a POS keyboard with an integrated mag stripe reader. It is from Unitech (www.ute.com). The support side of the website is better now. We had a hard time going through the documentation (Illegible in many languages), but we had great support from the company insofar as programming the reader to strip out the excess characters on the mag stripe. We have not had to replace any of the keyboards so far (knock wood).
We also had great support from III and 3M as we changed over our self-check machine to use the mag stripe instead of the barcode.
I am not sure where we purchased them, but they are available from a variety of vendors. I did not check other comparable products so I am not sure where they are price-wise in the market.

Subject: mag strip reader
Hello All,
We are in the market for a mag stripe reader to read our patron ID cards.
Preferably, we'd like it to read tracks 1 through 3. Does anyone have any
recommendations about what kind to get, and where to get them? Or even what
to avoid?. Thanks very much!
Elisabeth
