Paul,
for what it's worth... Your mentioning of the browser cache symptom reminds
me of another cache-related problem. It was discussed back in mid-January
under the subject "My Millennium 'you are logged in...". There was a patch
for this problem, but we found (and III recognized) that there was still an
outstanding III-browser cache problem going on, whether IE or Netscape.
Wonder if this could be somehow related to this system performance problem
being discussed here.

I am also interested in hearing the replies from the list. We have been
experiencing similar intermittent problems since we went live in December.
What does seem to help is clearing the cache (temporary internet files) from
the browser > Tools > Internet Options > General tab
Since it is not a staff function, then for us it is not the contention group
thing. The reports have come to me from staff workstations that are using
the web OPAC though. We have not observed (either way) whether it is related
to time of day/busyness or other activity levels. Interesting thought and I
will have the Ref Librarians watch this for us.
Since clearing cache on the staff OPACs has seemed to work everytime it has
been reported to me, I have not gotten as far as R Resetting a terminal.
I'll also give that a whirl. It may be necessary as our City MIS gang (great
group of techies) have the OPACs buttoned down to such a tight level that it
is quite a chore to log in as an admin user and get to the browser toolbars
to clear cache.

We have been having intermittent problems with our web OPAC connections.
We find that users are intermittently denied access to our catalogue,
getting a message beginning:
The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be
experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser
settings.
This occurs when the number of users logged in is well below our maximum
(e.g. may be 167 in total when we have a maximum of 300 possible logins).
The number of users logged in for each contention group does not approach
maximum either - e.g.
TOTAL 300
CONTENTION GROUPS
1 > staff 43 max - 22 logged in
2 > public 300 max - 75 logged in
3 > systems 2 max - 0 logged in
4 > loans 76 max - 70 logged in
We also use the proxy rewrite method of authentication for database access.
The problem does occur when login number rise and improve when the number
fall but, as explained above, the numbers of users do not appear sufficient
to cause this failure.
Sometimes using option R - Restart a terminal is sufficient to restore
access, but on other occasions access has to be restored by Innovative.
We have reported this to Innovative, and Software Engineering is currently
investigating the cause.
