Mieko's right (Oh yeah, like that's a big surprise!). I forgot that deleting variable fields was added in telnet circa 2001, provided you are working from a review file. The manual at #101392 describes the process, but doesn't say a word about indicators, nor does it use a MARC field example.

I tried it on a review file of records to be deleted. Specifying the indicators appears to work. You enter the marc tag and indicators as a 5 character string without breaks. Use a space for the blank indicator.

If you have access to global update, though, it is still a much more elegant and reliable way to do this.

I thought you had to specify indicator values when deleting variable
length fields on rapid update. I've often tried to delete variable length
fields without bothering to include indicator values and wondered why no
field has been deleted.
