Dear John,

We at the Institute of Technology in Tallaght have experienced this, and
extreme slowness when actually adding PDF files in the 'millennium media'
function. The second problem has been going on for months, everything from
our UNIX version's patch to the amount of RAM on the PC running the
application has been investigated...

We have this problem only intermittently and therefore, when I report it to
either IT Services here, or to III it 'appears' to have resolved itself by
the time anyone gets to look at it for our users.

Sorry I don't have a fix, but at least you know you're not alone.

Subject: VERY Slow Electronic Course Reserves

We have been experiencing extremely slow download times for our
electronic course reserve pdf files. It has been reported that users
have waited up to 15 minutes for document to display after
authenticating. My first thought was that the file size or network
traffic must be part of the problem. I tested this theory by copying
the file onto a web server in the same room on the same network
connected to the same switch. The difference was amazing. From my
office the document that took 8 1/2 minutes to download from our
Innovative Catalog took less than 15 seconds to come from the web
server. The slowness is constant. It doesn't just happen occasionally.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so was there a solution? I can't
help but wonder if the Innovative system is encrypting the document as
it sends it down the pipe. I have contacted them but am still waiting
for a solution.
