- Subject: Reminder about vacation messages
As I look at the blanket of snow outside my office window, a little
voice in Boston beckons to me, "Time to send the vacation reminder..."
This seems like a good time to remind subscribers of the havoc that
vacation messages can cause. The INNOPAC list has more than 2,900
subscribers, and that is potentially a lot of people to annoy if your
vacation message propagates back to the list. (Not to mention the fact
that you can cause a mail loop with yourself by replying to your own
vacation message.)
A vacation reply program should only reply to messages sent directly to
the recipient (e.g., the "To:" header is your e-mail address), not to
mail messages sent through e-mail lists. It should reply with a
"Precedence: bulk" header so other automated tools will not reply to it.
And it should never reply to a given individual more than once.
If you are uncertain whether your vacation message obeys these rules, it
is a good idea to unsubscribe or set your list options to "nomail" to
eliminate the possibility of your message going where you don't intend.
You can accomplish both by visiting your list options page:
<http://innopacusers.org/list/listinfo/innopac>
While you are there, check to see whether the list thinks your address
is the same as you think it is. If your library has changed mail
machines or addresses on you over the past year, your list address needs
to reflect that change or your postings will be held for verification.
Thanks for your assistance in keeping the INNOPAC list a clean and tidy
place and many good wishes for a wonderful holiday season!
