The Woodfin Suites Hotel is very nice, and VERY close to Innovative. Check
with Woodfin to see what rate they will charge you if you mention you are
attending Innovative training. When I compared prices with several of my
fellow attendees at a recent System Administration Workshop, I was about $10
higher in the Woodfin Suites than those staying at the Four Points Hotel.

Subject: RE: System Administration Workshop
As a former Innovative employee who spent many days in Emeryville, let me
share some "Emeryville tips" for anyone going to System Administration
Training, Load Profile Training, or any other visit to Innovative's HQ.
1. The Four Points Hotel is not bad, but the traffic around the hotel is
quite heavy at most hours of the day except the wee hours of the morning. I
would second the suggestion to get a room that faces the front of the
building (a "bay" view) as opposed to one that faces the back (a "mountain"
view). The back of the hotel faces railroad tracks that can have freight
trains rumbling through in the middle of the night.
Also, use the back entrance to the Four Points to walk UNDER Powell Street
along Shellmound Street to get to Innovative. This will take you past the
Woodfin hotel. You take your chances crossing the intersection of Christie
and Powell Streets.
2. The Woodfin Suites hotel is nice, but can be pricey. It also faces the
railroad tracks, so a "bay" view is preferable. The Woodfin has a
complimentary Happy Hour each night for guests.
3. The Courtyard hotel is nice, but it is about a 1/4 - ½ mile walk to
Innovative. The courtyard faces the freeway, so an upper floor would be
recommended if noise bothers you.
4. The Holiday Inn is also a hotel choice, but I would recommend this one
the least. It is on the opposite site of the freeway, it's about a ½ mile
walk to Innovative, and you have to contend with a lot of traffic (crossing
under the freeway and across two busy intersections. Additionally, there is
only one restaurant on that side of the freeway (Chevy's - a Tex-mex chain).
5. There is a lot more to do in Emeryville now than when I first moved to
the Bay Area 5 years ago, including many more places to get a nice dinner,
and places to shop or see a movie. Emeryville has two movie theaters (all
walking distance to hotels), an excellent IKEA (supposedly the largest IKEA
in the USA when it was built — for those of you who don't know what IKEA is,
it's a large Scandinavian housewares store), and some great shops and
restaurants. Best of all there is a Barnes and Noble and a Borders within
walking distance.
6. Places to eat in Emeryville.
Public Market (http://www.emerymarket.com) - this is Emeryville's version
of a multicultural food court that is great for lunch or a quick dinner.
Choices include:
- Chinese
- Vietnamese
- Thai
- Mexican
- Greek
- Italian
- Mediterranean
- Korean
- Afghan
and many more.
Bay Street Shopping Center (http://www.baystreetemeryville.com) - mostly
chain restaurants, but good for a nice "sit-down" dinner:
- California Pizza Kitchen
- Fuddrucker's (hamburgers)
- Pasta Pomodoro (Italian)
- Asqew Grill (skewers)
- Buckhorn Grill (sandwiches)
- Zao (Asian noodles)
There are also some other chain restaurants within walking distance (with my
personal yea or nea):
- Chevy's (Tex-mex) - OK
- Lyon's (American) - not recommended
- Denny's (American) - open 24 hours - but not recommended
- Burger King - OK for a quick lunch
7. The Emeryville bus (the Emery-Go-Round) (http://www.emerygoround.com)
stops at Innovative and all hotels. This is a great way to get around if the
weather is not too nice (it rains in Northern CA on and off from November to
May), and is also an excellent means to get to the BART, the subway that
runs from the East Bay to San Francisco. The Emery-Go-Round runs from 5am
-10pm about every 30 minutes. All routes go to the BART station, so just hop
on a bus and go.
8. If you have never been to San Francisco, please visit! If you have an
extra day or some extra time, do go over to the City and check it out. You
won't regret it!

I didn't try their food, but will second
the comment about the intersection. Emeryville
is probably the least pedestrian-friendly place
I have been. Press the walk button at the intersection,
and then sit down and take a nap!

Just make sure your room is in the front side of the hotel, don't eat in its
restaurant (there is an open mall behind), and finally be careful when
crossing to III building, it is a crazy intersection there!!

The workshop is great! Just do not stay in the Four Points hotel!
To more about the workshop:
http://csdirect.iii.com/documentation/asaa/asaaintro.doc
If you are a beginner and new to III system, you will hear lots of
warnings from the trainer not to change anything in your system till you
are sure. If you go to "learn" about your system, not to "change" your
system then my advice is to go, you will learn good deal about how the
III system works. Also, you can take issues or problem you face in your
system to address then with III staff of your choice. Don't miss the
tour of the III company..and the lunch!!

I inherited our system over a year ago. I recently found out about the
System Administration workshops that Innovative provides. I am curious
to know what those of you who have attended these workshops thought. Is
it worth the time and money, what can I expect, etc.? I am mainly
looking at the "beginning" System Administration workshop at this time,
but feedback on any of the workshops would be great.
Thanks.
