- Subject: Compelling upgrade?
Hi folks,
The present message is directed to those III sites that have migrated
either their hardware or underlying database software.
In response to our request for same, UH Libraries have recently received
a quotation from III for costs associated with an upgrade of both our
server environment (from an Alpha ES40 to a Sun Fire V480) and the
underlying database server (from III's proprietary DB to Oracle).
Without getting too specific on an open list, the bottom line is pretty
steep in terms of total dollars. Our question to those sites who may
have done either or both of these migrations is :
Was it 'worth it', and if so, why? What specific benefits did you
accrue that made it what you'd consider to be a compelling upgrade? If
you made the upgrade and *don't* feel it was worth it, we'd like to know
about that, as well.
If you prefer to respond off-list, please feel free to e-mail me
directly. If there is sufficient interest, I'll be glad to summarize
(omitting names for those who reply off-list) for the list.
Thanks in advance,
- mt
