Our Museum's IS&T department is getting concerned with the number of
firewall ports that III requires to be open. Is that a familiar
problem? How do you deal with it? More specifically: how to restrict
access to the OPAC only to authorized users (library staff, Innovative)?

Oleg,
We felt comfortable opening the necessary ports only to network
addresses owned
by Innovative.

Hello III Users: In our Library Newsletter, we want to alert our
community about upgrading to Millenium. At this time, we have not
purchased any of the extrap features such as MAP.
Would those of you who have migrated from the original Innovative system
to Millenium lme know what the benefits have been for the opac users?
(As staff, we are looking forward to the upgrade.)
Do you think that the Advance Searching capability has increased usage
of your opac?
Also, if you have purchased any products, that have you found popular
with your users, we would appreciate hearing about these as well.
Thank you for responding to this query.

How does a person learn to use these scripting languages? Formal

I want to learn to use scripting, but don't want to waste time trying

I can't understand the rationale of limiting access to the OPAC to your
library staff (after all didn't "OPAC" once stand for "online public
access catalog"?), but it is possible to limit access by IP address.
See the user manual page #101733.

I like the online courses offered by Ed2Go. The classes consist of 12
lessons over
six weeks, are pass/no pass, and inexpensive (usually $59-$89, excluding
software). A new section starts every four weeks. I've found the
lessons to be
well written. What you get out of the class depends of the time and
effort you put
in. If you pass the quizzes and final exam, you get a certificate
stating that you
successfully completed the course and earned CEU credits.
Classes offered include PERL scripting, writing web pages, web graphics,
and many
more.
Check out Ed2Go's web site for more information and the college closest
to you that
offers its classes.

In my own case, it's been a matter of self-teaching and reading/studying
scripts written by others. A script is a computer program, and so
general programming books (especially BASIC/Visual Basic/VBScript) are
useful to a great extent but *not* with particulars related to
programming a telnet III interface. In my opinion, the latter really
requires looking at scripts written specifically for III systems and
seeing how people did things.
For general OML programming, you might take a look at my son Joel's
page, "OML for the Complete Beginner"--many OCLC customers wanting to
use scripts (macros) have found this to be a very helpful introduction.
It's at <http://users.rcn.com/aardy/pfw/omlindex.html>. (Please note
that this is a *programming* introduction to using OML and does not deal
at all with handling the III system--that requires studying III-specific
scripts. See the next paragraph.)
For online collections of OML macros for various automated systems
(including III), see <http://www.ahml.info/pfw/omlsites.html>. If you'd
like to see scripts that I've written specifically for use with III, see
<http://www.ahml.info/pfw/innopac.html>. You might also check the
archives of the PFW discussion list at <http://felix.acu.edu/pfw/>.
Unfortunately, the keyword search there does not work, and you'll have
to scan each month manually for any references to III/Innovative.
Hope this helps a bit!
Harvey

I am looking for other users who run a Windows 2000 domain and use group

The reason I am putting out this call is to determine how much can be

I want to know specific GP's used for staff machines, what sort of

Just for a point of reference, our Library is running a Windows 2000

Richard,
Here's a couple ideas on this that might help. I'm assuming you want to
know the totals for certain MARC variable fields that were loaded - for
example - how many 100 fields got loaded during say the 100,000 bib
load.
(is that correct?)
1. Maybe III will do this for you or give you this info. if you ask.
It
may be easy for them to do, or may have been a byproduct of the load (as
statistics) on their end.
2. If fact, down the road, if you use III's Read/Write Marc records
feature, you'll see that it provides these kinds of stats when doing a
load,
even in TEST mode. For example, if you were to test Read/Load a batch
of
patron records, you could first see rough statistics in test mode on how
many total fields might be coming in, to see if the patron file is as
comprehensive as you need it to be. I mention this because you can take
advantage of this to find out the marc fields totals for records alreay
in
your system - by exporting them, importing them, and merely test loading
them. Takes a little bit of effort, but it will work. Don't know if
it's
really practical for the number of recs you could be talking about.
3. I wonder if any of the 3rd party marc editor/manipulator programs
like
MARCedit can do this kind of counting for you, and possibly give you
even
more detailed stats. Other programs like Marc maker / Marc breaker (by
LC I
think) are mentioned in the archives. But again, this idea assumes it's
practical for you to be able to export a certain type marc file out of
your
system for processing/analysis.
Otherwise... I don't know of an easier way to do what you're interested
in
doing, though it'd make a nice enhancement to "Create STATISTICAL
reports".
Maybe others have other ideas or can comment.

Our patrons also love My Millennium. What they mostly enjoy is not
putting
in their library card number over and over as they place holds.
However, we
also recently turned on the shopping cart feature which now means they
can
place holds on multiple titles at once. They love that even more.
One problem with My Millennium for staff though. Staff want to be able
to
login to the web catalog and view staff mode. To do this My Millennium
uses
the ptype of "staff". And it does not time out. Sounds great? Well,
it is
except when you want to do it at a service desk (reference, childrens,
etc.)
Public librarians spend most of their day placing holds for patrons at
the
desk. If we are logged in as ourselves through My Millennium then we can
never place a hold because the best part (for the webpac) is that My
Millennium doesn't prompt for a patron record to place a hold since you
are
already logged in. So, our staff spend a lot of time going back and
forth
between the web catalog and Search/Holds in MilCirc when they need to
see
staff information on a record (last time checked in, etc...). Seems as
if
we ought to be able to control this through an IP address or a login.
Since
enhancements are now open, I think I'll turn this in. It would make our
lives much easier at the desk.

Here at Gettysburg College, we currently run a turnkey triple I system
running on a DEC Alpha 433 that's about five years old.=20
=20
It's showing its age and we are thinking of upgrading.
=20
Innovative has suggested a new 600 MHz Dec Alpha system. Our technical
people are not too keen on Dec Alpha's,
though, as they indicate the industry has somewhat turned away from
these systems. As a result, we thought we would explore our options. =20
=20
Is anyone else running on non Dec hardware? In particular, Pentium based
hardware?
=20
Is anyone running a software only system, meaning running it on their
own hardware and getting only software support from
triple I?
=20
It would be helpful to me to hear (offline of the listserv) from those
folks that answer affirmatively to either of those two questions.
=20
I can summarize responses to the list if people are interested.

Thanks for the help,

Here is a question for all the people who know acquisitions (which I
don't
and we just lost our head of acq). Most of the items we get come with
the
invoice or the invoice comes before the items.
BUT if we receive an item that we want to process and get circulating
asap,
but have not received the invoice yet, how is it handled in
acquisitions?
My boss dropped this on me today. She said there was an easy way in
Dynix,
but the former acq head said it could not be done in Innovative. I
looked
at the manual and the notes I could find, but cannot find anything that
leads me to believe this can be done. How about it?
Thanks.

At the 2003 Innovative User group Meeting, Doug Randall (III) presented
an excellent program about the future of Alpha servers and technology.
His program is available on CSDirect and is titled "Post-Merger Changes
in the Corporate Landscsape." It's worth a look when planning a server
upgrade.

Does My Millennium remember card numbers when placing holds in a

Our patrons also love My Millennium. What they mostly enjoy is not
putting in their library card number over and over as they place holds.
However, we also recently turned on the shopping cart feature which now
means they can place holds on multiple titles at once. They love that
even more.
One problem with My Millennium for staff though. Staff want to be able
to login to the web catalog and view staff mode. To do this My
Millennium uses the ptype of "staff". And it does not time out. Sounds
great? Well, it is except when you want to do it at a service desk
(reference, childrens, etc.) Public librarians spend most of their day
placing holds for patrons at the desk. If we are logged in as ourselves
through My Millennium then we can never place a hold because the best
part (for the webpac) is that My Millennium doesn't prompt for a patron
record to place a hold since you are already logged in. So, our staff
spend a lot of time going back and forth between the web catalog and
Search/Holds in MilCirc when they need to see staff information on a
record (last time checked in, etc...). Seems as if we ought to be able
to control this through an IP address or a login. Since enhancements
are now open, I think I'll turn this in. It would make our lives much
easier at the desk.

Turning on the My Millennium was of most benefit to our OPAC users.
This include patron self-renewals, preferred lists and emails sent to
the patron when a new item is added to their preferred list. Some of our
patrons use this like a best sellers list to tell them when to place a
hold on a new book.
