- Subject: Barcodes After RFID Implementation
At the Minneapolis Public Library, we are investigating the move to RFID
technology. We expect there would be a transition period during which we
would apply RFID tags and barcodes to all materials. However, when we reach
a point where all, or most, of the collection has been tagged, we're
wondering if it will still be necessary to continue applying barcodes to
address those situations when an eye-readable identifier will be needed,
e.g. touch tone telephone renewals? How have other sites that have moved to
RFID technology dealt with this and similar situations when an RFID reader
isn't available? Do you continue to apply barcodes? Do you have a barcode or
other number printed on the tag that uniquely identifies the item?
Thanks for your input,
Dave Klaiber
