Hi,

It has to be set up, but the requirements for login are that one of the 
fields authenticated against has to be a unique, indexed field.  Most 
places use a barcode, although a social security number could also be used 
(this is NOT adviseable, due to privacy issues.)  We also investigated the 
possibility of using our university network's unique network ID, but never 
implemented it.

But you absolutely have to use some sort of indexed field unique to each 
individual patron.
