First of all -- good luck ! !

Next - we are going through similar challenges while an entire HVAC system is being installed while we provide library services at full pace. The disruption to staff and patrons is a challenge, and the most important thing you'll need is a sense of humor, followed by extra doses of patience. Fer instance, one day a few weeks ago the Circ librarian went into the computer room to run notices, and knocks on my door off the CR to tell me that the ceiling is leaking. The construction guys were drilling in the granite walls upstairs, and using water to cool off the drill bits. Water will run all over the place trying to find a low spot or place to travel, and guess what - it was right over the computer room. The network rack with switches, hubs and routers was missed by the murky stream by about 2". We've now got a plastic tent over all the equipment in the computer room, careful to provide plenty of airflow to keep equip cool, but protection from dripping water and falling ceiling tiles.

Yesterday we actually had to power down the whole building for an 8 hour overnight stretch, and III was careful to instruct us (newbee site) to power down the server and RAID tower with specific instructions. Call the III help desk with anything like that - they were great.

Finally - at another site with another vendor system, we did have a generator in the building to run a methane gas detection system, and we deliberately ran the computer room off that generator. It worked awesome! We could check out books and do OPAC searches in the dark. But we were very careful to have a high-end UPS and power conditioner between the generator and the server and other CR equipment.

I think more technical people will caution you about phases and polarity and other mumbo-jumbo that is serious biz.

Gpod luck,

Paul

Subject: Use of Generators to Run Server

We are a small library in the middle of a renovation. We have recently found out that our electrical to the building will need to be upgraded. The electric company and contractors are unable to do a power down switch over and power back up. The Library will be on a generator for approximately a week. Has any Innovative Library been placed on a generator? Would you be willing to share your experiences, problems with me. I don't have the particulars on the size of the generator at this time, but understand it is the size of a semi truck. This switch will be in 2 weeks. Thank you all in advance for any information you can give me.
